Dominic Thiem has just secured his place amongst the best in the world by winning his first ever grand slam at the US Open. One of his biggest weapons is of course his one handed backhand. Here are several drills you can practice to develop your backhand whether you use a single or double hander.
These 7 drills are guaranteed to give you a more effective and more versatile backhand side.
1. Step in off the triangle - Focuses on weight transfer
2. Step back off the triangle - Focus on either deep backhands andor hitting off the back foot.
3. Defence to attack - Maintain an aggressive mindset and earn the short ball.
4. Racket head speed - Aim to accelerate as fast as you can through the shot (provided your shape is still proper)
5. Wide ball - Stay aggressive off the wide ball and use a crossover step for quicker recovery.
6. Drop feeds moving in - Work on adding more topspin and developing sharper angles on your way in.
7. Two cross, one line - This tactic will help you exploit the weakness (usually the backhand side for a righty) and open up space on the court.
Give these exercises a go and let us know how you get on :)
